I was invited on Saturday to the unveiling of a new landmark on the approach to Lanark from Hyndford Bridge. It was a very moving occasion.
The sculpture, silhouettes of four Cameronian soldiers around the famous cap badge, stands opposite Winston Barracks, housing now but originally built as barracks for the Cameronian (Scottish Rifles) Regiment.
Congratulations to Lanark Community Development Trust, South Lanarkshire Council, Lanark Rotary Club and the local businesses who worked together to bring this about.
Over 50 years since the regiment was disbanded, it is good to see the burgh's heritage being commemorated in this way.
Eleanor McLean has also produced a leaflet, "The Cameronians The Burgh & the Barracks" illustrating this part of the regiment's history.
