The SNP MSP for Clydesdale, Aileen Campbell MSP, has welcomed the new Retail Sales Index for Scotland which shows continued growth over the past year.

Commenting, Aileen Campbell MSP said:

"The new Retail Sales Index statistics show that retail sales performance has continued to grow over the past year, and are a further positive sign of recovery in the Scottish economy. Growth of 1.1% during the fourth quarter of 2013, and by 4% over the last year is extremely positive for Scotland.

"It is important that we harness local retailers in our towns and villages and give them support as we build Scotland’s economy in to prosperity. With unemployment at a five year low, it is important that we continue to build the local economy and in turn jobs so that we can see a vibrant local community.

"The Scottish Government budget which is being put forward offers further help for retailers with an expansion of the small business bonus to support a further 4,000 businesses.

"This year the people of Scotland face a decision about the kind of Scotland they want to live in - one in which we take responsibility and decide our own future, or one in which we wait for things to happen to us.

"With independence future Scottish governments could create a genuinely appropriate set of complementary policies - in relation to taxation, innovation and labour market regulation- to secure stronger levels of economic growth and job creation from which all the people of Scotland could benefit."
