Aileen Campbell, MSP for Clydesdale, is delighted with the latest progress on the referendum bill as the important first stage is passed at Holyrood.

With yesterday’s announcement, Deputy First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, set out plans that the referendum will be fair and transparent.

To be held on September 18, the referendum itself is just over a year away.

Speaking about the latest progress of the bill, Aileen said:

"This step shows that the main parties at Holyrood support the main principles of the bill.

"With a further two stages to go, we are at a time where we can realise how exciting and significant the referendum is for the people of Scotland.

"It will allow the people of Clydesdale to have their say and make their contribution to shaping Scotland into a country they can be proud to live in.

"Even more, the referendum will allow 16 and 17 year olds to vote which is a brilliant chance for young people to make their voice heard.

"With Westminster welfare cuts hitting the most vulnerable, the referendum is a golden opportunity for the people to take a step forward and say they want Scotland to go in a more positive direction".
