Aileen Campbell, constituency MSP for Clydesdale has welcomed the cap on rail fare charges in Scotland.

While the rise will be capped at plus 1% in Scotland, fares will rise by inflation (RPI) plus 3% in England.

Despite the benefits for consumers in Scotland Aileen remains concerned about the UK increases and the impact this will have on both Scottish businesses and families who travel south. She is also aware that the tourists who will be coming north to visit areas such as Clydesdale will be hit by higher fares.

Aileen said:

"I am greatly encouraged that the Scottish Government have capped increases at inflation + 1 per cent for the Scotrail franchise, which contrasts with the 3 per cent above inflation increase in the rest of the UK.

"It is extremely disappointing that travellers looking to holiday in Scotland or to travel here for business will face a huge hike in the price of their fares.

"I know that in the next three years in particular Scotland can look forward to significant opportunities in tourism. I am determined to do what I can to ensure that Clydesdale benefits as much as possible.

"At a time when we want to see more people taking the train it is irrational for the UK Government to allow fares to rise so much.

"Rail travel helps protect the environment by encouraging people to travel by train, and is vital for improving links between Scottish rural and more urban communities.

"There is no question that the price of travel is on the up - not least because of the price of fuel - The Scottish Government’s decision to keep rail prices as low as possible demonstrates the priority given here to helping individuals families and communities.

"If the UK Government continues to levy VAT and fuel duty at the current rate then travel will become even more expensive particularly for those in rural areas who often travel long distances to work.
