Saved - Biggar Branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland.

I welcome the announcement from Royal Bank of Scotland today that its Biggar branch is to remain open, but I am disappointed that it will be proceeding with the closure of its Douglas branch.

The announcement follows the publication of recommendations from the independent review by Johnston Carmichael who were tasked into looking again at RBS’s decision to close certain branches. I was among those who made representations to the review.

Biggar and Douglas had a temporary reprieve while this review took place, and the review has recommended that Biggar should remain open.

The announcement that Biggar RBS branch is to remain open is one I welcome. It is only one of two branches to have its closure permanently reversed – and that is testament to the community determination to keep this essential facility for rural Clydesdale open.

The community was called upon to ‘use it or lose it’ – and the strength of the town’s effort has made the difference to keep the branch open.

However, this announcement is also tinged with the disappointment that RBS is to proceed with the closure of its Douglas branch.

I will be seeking to ensure that access to essential banking facilities remain within reach of customers in the Douglas area and that the recommendation made by the review, that RBS should enhance the quality and accessibility of alternative banking facilities, is matched by tangible results on the ground.
