SNP MSP for Clydesdale, Aileen Campbell has welcomed progress made by Prostate Cancer UK.

Prostate Cancer UK launched the campaign entitled, ‘Men United v Prostate Cancer: Five Inequalities, Five Solutions’ in August and is now marking significant progress of the project. The campaign calls for five actions to be taken to tackle inequalities surrounding prostate cancer.

Since the campaign launch, Public Health Minister, Michael Matheson has announced that robot assisted surgery is to be introduced on NHS Scotland for the first time. The first robot is to be available in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary from the beginning of 2015, with another to be brought to the central belt within the next three years. The Scottish Cancer Taskforce has also agreed to introduce a National Cancer Patient Experience Survey, expected to be fully implemented by the end of 2015.

The campaign outlines three suggestions to tackle remaining inequalities. Firstly, the inclusion of prostate cancer in the Detect Cancer Early Initiative. Secondly, to improve GP awareness and implementation of the Prostate Cancer Risk Management Programme (PCRMP) and finally, the development and promotion of comprehensive guidelines on the management of the potential life-changing side effects of prostate cancer treatment, such as erectile dysfunction.

Commenting, Aileen said:

"The campaign run by Prostate Cancer UK has seen great progress with thanks to significant support from the Scottish Government. The campaign team have done great work which has not only raised awareness, but has offered practical solutions to real problems faced by many men.

"Prostate cancer is unfortunately becoming increasingly common for men in Scotland. I will continue to support the Five Inequalities, Five Solutions campaign to help ensure every man in Scotland receives the treatment he deserves."
